UPDATES

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

What a year 2020 has been.  The last several months have presented all of us with circumstances
we would have never predicted and with a future being just as unpredictable.  None of us knows
exactly what the long-term impact this global pandemic will have on all of us.

Today our families, neighbors, and friends are struggling to wrap their heads around our new
reality.  Many have never been in a position of needing assistance and others struggling on a
normal basis, now with the stresses of Covid 19, are feeling overwhelmed.

Your gift to the United Way of Gibson County is more important than ever.  From the start of the
pandemic in March, the United Way of Gibson County has worked in collaboration with our Gibson
County partner agencies and with the Covid-19 Crisis Response Fund of the Greater Evansville Region
to ensure funding and resources were available in Gibson County so that vital needs could be met
and programs and services could continue.  United Way of Gibson County has also enrolled over
600 Gibson County children ages birth-5 years of age for our Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
These children receive a free book each month mailed to their home until their fifth birthday.
When we join our gifts together and invest in strategies designed to advance and support
education, financial stability, and good health, we begin to see a larger impact in our community.

Without donations from individuals like you, this would not be possible.  Donations help sustain
our organization and benefit the community in which we serve.  We are counting on your support.
Remember that your gift may be tax-deductible.

Thank you in advance for your support!  It takes an entire community to make a difference!

Sincerely,

Jamie Schafer
Executive Director
United Way of Gibson County

Education

Consider this: 5.6 million US teens and young adults ages 16 to 24 are neither in school nor working. Many of these "disconnected youth" are simply cut off from the education and career paths that could help them live a good life and make positive contributions to our society and our economy.

Childhood Literacy

Nationally, two-thirds of students are not reading on grade level by 4th grade. That proportion rises to four-fifths for children from low-wage families. Our work in the area of early grade literacy will enable us to identify, fuel and replicate best practices in our local schools.

Affordable Housing

To be financially stable, working families need housing that is affordable. Today, more than 4 million working families spend more than half of their income for rent and/or mortgages, leaving them particularly vulnerable to eviction or foreclosure if their income is interrupted.

Volunteer

Advancing the common good is less about helping one person at a time and more about changing systems to help all of us. We are all connected and interdependent. We all win when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable, when people are healthy.
